Head Teacher Mrs Sue Rowe said, ‘“This is an excellent set of results; as a non-selective school we are extremely proud of the achievements of all our pupils. The students are a credit to St Joseph’s and their families and I look forward to seeing them using this springboard to fulfil their considerable potential as they progress onto the next stage of education or into apprenticeships. My congratulations to them all on such tremendous and well deserved results.”
The top performers for 2011 were Freddie Bowden, Lily Robinson, Penny Tilsley and Head Pupil Grace Waterhouse who all achieved A* and A Grades.
The results are the pinnacle of an excellent year for St Joseph’s having also received the 2011 ISA Award of Excellence. With boys now from Nursery to Year 8 St Joseph’s School looks forward to another year of excellence across the board.
The Independent School Association is an association of approximately 300 accredited schools nationwide. The association selects one school each year to receive its most coveted award, the Award for Excellence.
At the annual conference held in Bristol last week St Joseph’s School, Launceston was named as the winner of this prestigious award for 2011 which was presented by the Association Chairman Mr Arthur Bray. The school was represented at the conference by Mr Graeme Garrett and Mrs Sue Rowe.
The citation on the award reads: In recognition of outstanding public examination attainment in 2009 and 2010, excellent Key Stage 2 results, national recognition for music and ballet, contribution to the community through charitable fund-raising, high achievements in individual and team sports, success at all levels in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and a significant rise in pupil numbers’.
Mrs Rowe, Acting Head, is delighted for all the staff, pupils and parents at St Joseph’s who have contributed so much in order to secure this award.
Mrs Rowe said “It is wonderful that achievements in so many areas have been recognised and we will continue to provide an excellent education with small classes and high expectations. I am particularly pleased that the citation recognises the high quality all round education provided at St Joseph’s for both girls and boys. For some time our academic results have been widely recognised as excellent but this award highlights the outstanding performance across the board.”
Over the past twelve months pupils from St Joseph’s have represented the school in National, Regional and County Competitions. The choir were invited to sing at the Royal Albert Hall and the Junior Football and Junior and Senior Netball teams have won their respective leagues.
The huge success of the school has also been reflected by a 20% increase in pupil numbers over the last eighteen months.
Over the last two years pupils at St Joseph’s School have organised their own fund raising initiatives that have raised in excess of £6,000 for charity. This follows the school ethos of community spirit being at the centre of all we do.
With pupil numbers higher than ever, St Joseph’s School are looking forward to further success in the future.
This year’s competition was held at Trinity School, Teignmouth. I took along a selection of GCSE Art and Textiles work to hang alongside entries from other South West Independent Schools.
The exhibition set up looked wonderful, show casing children\'s work from across the region: the competition was steep! The work was judged by an established artist from Wiltshire called,Paul Deacon. He is renowned for his spectacular naval paintings. He was also Head of Art at a large school near Swindon.
I am thrilled to announce that we came away with two prizes. Anna Tetley won the Under 16\'s Textile prize for her stunning flower piece, and Grace Losasso won the Under 16\'s Art prize for her complex buildings painting. Anna Tetley. Winner of Under 16 Textile prize, ISA South West. Grace Losasso. Winner of Under 16 Art prize, ISA South West. (Grace is pictured above)
Pictured above is Anna Tetley who won the Under 16 Textile prize. Full write up below.
Congratulations to Lydia Uglow for becoming the runner up in the South West regional finals in the ‘Future Chef’ competition at Tiverton
8000 students entered this competition from all over the country. Lydia won the Cornwall heat in December and competed against 8 other students in February 2011.
Lydia’s food was not only tasted great but her presentation was superb and the judges also commented on how calm and unflustered she was.
Apparently there was only 1 point between Lydia and the winner who now goes on to the finals in London in March.
Along with a certificate Lydia was presented with her own chefs Whites and apron with her name embroidered on them and a HIX recipe book.
