On 12th October 2011 St Joseph’s junior rugby team were invited to play a friendly rugby match against Blundell’s School. This was our first match together as a team. The match was played in very good spirit with St Joseph’s taking an early lead. Blundell’s fought their way back into the game and it became a hard fought, close match. St Joseph’s then came into their own, and took charge of the match triumphing by 33 points to 26. Michael Barton scored 4 tries and 4 conversions with Indiana Douglas scoring the winning try. We were all proud of our performance as it was our first match together as a team. We are looking forward to welcoming Blundell’s to St Joseph’s for a return match. Report by James Law – Year 6 Rugby Prefect.
Pictured above are the St Joseph’s Rugby Teams with Mr and Mrs Shute owners of Rosecraddoc Holidays. Mr and Mrs Shute have very kindly sponsored the new rugby kit which the pupils are delighted with. Rosecraddoc Holiday Village and Rosecraddoc Manor are set in a beautiful woodland valley near Liskeard. With 38 acres there are plenty of footpaths and places to explore, as well as a fishing lake and tennis courts. For further information please visit www.rosecraddocholidays.co.uk
Teamwork was definitely the name of the game on the St Joseph\'s School Silver expedition in Wales this summer. After a very early start on the first morning my team and I were very excited to be on our way. However, we very soon found ourselves a little lost and had to work out the best way to get back on track. Fortunately this didn’t take long and with re-charged batteries after lunch we even arrived at our campsite before the teachers! This seemed rather too good to be true – and it was – we weren’t quite in the right place!
After much searching we finally found the site and together put up our tents and cooked and ate our meals. Exhausted we fell into our beds (sleeping bags) ready to sleep - and it was only 7.30pm! Slumber, however, had to wait because the other group arrived about 2 hours after and we all got up to help them put up their tents and get their meals: they had an even worse day than us!
Day 2 came all too quickly and involved a huge climb. We almost gave up, but encouraged, cajoled and helped each other so that finally we made it – and what a view: we were glad we did it.
On the final day we decided that we worked out that walking for half an hour and resting for five minutes was the best way of making maximum progress. Using this technique we quickly climbed “Sugar Loaf” – and to help us even more we kept singing (American Soldier Style) and before we knew it we were at Crickhowell – the finish!
We were all exhausted but so proud of each other for meeting the challenge: it was all down to teamwork!

Beth Mathews, a Year 10 pupil at St Joseph\'s School, completed the gruelling 608 mile non-stop Fastnet race, which involved 5 days at sea in some quite difficult and challenging weather conditions. The Fastnet is one of yacht racings big Ocean racing challenges and to have completed it is no mean achievement.
Beth was one of a crew of 7 on board the 33 foot yacht ‘X-Rated’, skippered by Charles Gurney and was probably the youngest person to be taking part in the race, which involved 313 boats (some 2000 crew members). They finished 20th in class and 90th overall.
Congratulations to Beth and her team.
During the busy Summer Term at St Joseph’s School Mr Fanet took a group of pupils to The Barn Climbing Centre at Milton Abbot for a course in Rock Climbing. Pictured above is Year 5 pupil James Law in action. All the pupils who took part in this activity thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The Final of the North Cornwall District Cup was held on Friday 1st July at St Joseph\'s School where the visitors were Launceston Community Primary School.
The final had been much anticipated as the dire winter weather had pushed the game into the summer term.
The two teams were evenly matched throughout the game with a single goal from James Law in the first half winning the match for St Joseph\'s School.
The spirit within the St Joseph\'s team was flawless with Alex Hellyar taking player of the match.
The entire U11 squad has grown in ability and attitude since September last year and the double achievement of winning the Cup and Division Two in their first season ever is a testament to the their endeavour.
On Thursday June 23rd the St Joseph’s Football team travelled to Lewannick. The match was a divisional play-off to decide which teams from the two sections of Division 2 should be promoted to the top flight for the next season.
The St Joseph’s team was a little rusty having not played a competitive match for three months due to taking part in Cricket and Athletics. Slowly the team settled back into their usual combative routine.
Two first half goals from Michael Barton plus an own goal saw St Joseph’s 3-1 up at half time.
The second half produced some resolute defending from the defensive trio and a good goal from James Law. The game finished 4-1 to St Joseph’s.
Player of the match goes to Gisele Parnall who showed outstanding determination throughout.
The team would like to thank their coach Mr Barton and assistant coach Mr Marsh for helping the team to achieve promotion this season
Kate Marks from St Joseph\'s School was given a tennis master class from three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker as her bid to become a Barclays Ball Kid entered its final stage. The 14-year-old St Joseph’s School pupil was one of 130 youngsters to be given expert tuition from Becker at the Barclays Ball Kids national trials at Westway Sports Centre in London. Up for grabs is the prize of starring alongside Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and British number one Andy Murray at the O2Arena as one of 30 ball kids for the ATP World Tour Finals in November. Tavistock Tennis Club’s Marks demonstrated her talent in front of Becker and Murray’s former coach Mark Petchey and admitted it would be a dream come true to rub shoulders with the likes of Federer and Nadal.‘It would just be an amazing experience to be at the O2 Finals, I really like the idea of being a ball girl and working as a team,’ said Kate, who beat off competition from 2500 other hopefuls to get this far. I would love the chance to see some of my heroes up close; Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are my two favourite players in the world so to meet them would just be incredible. ‘Novak has been pretty much unbeatable this year while Roger is a really good role model. It would be pretty nerve wracking to be a ball girl for them but I think I could cope, you just have to remember what you’ve been taught. ’The nationwide Barclays Ball Kids search began last November with Kate –who plays tennis three times a week –qualifying from the Exeter trial. And Becker, who along with Petchey will select the lucky winners, believes the lucky 30 are in for a treat they will never forget if they reach the O2.Boris Becker, who also won two Australian Opens and one US Open during his illustrious career, said: ‘I have been very impressed with what I have seen and I couldn’t believe the standard last year but this year it seems even better, kids like Kate have been amazing.’

On Friday, 18th February 2011 students from Year 5 to 7 travelled to Hatherop Castle School, near Cirencester to compete at the ISA South West Cross Country Trials. It was an early start and the journey seemed to be never ending.
The team of 11 arrived and walked a very well planned course mixing woodland with open fields. The conditions were cold and a low fog hung over the area. This would challenge all of the athletes.
Laura Sant set a high standard in the first race, comfortably winning the Under 12 Girls event. A determined Michael Barton won the Under 12 Boys race with Alex Hellyar finishing in seventh place. In the Under 14 Girls race Hettie Tetley ran a strong race and crossed the finish line in fourth place. Congratulations to all those that took part. Thanks must go to Mr Ian Barton for driving, and Mr Harry Marsh and Mrs Sarah Watson for managing the team.

On a cold February afternoon, 13 St. Joseph’s pupils ran in the St. Petroc’s Cross Country event at Summerleaze Downs, Bude. The pupils in years 5 and 6 ran a total of 2500m two laps of an undulating wind swept course and the year 4 pupils ran one lap, about 1300m. All the pupils walked the course taking in the route and any obstacles that were in the way, they listened well and where ready to race.
The first race was the U9 boys Sam Luckhurst, Archie Sparrow and Maxwell Wilkerson-Hunt took part; all had good starts and they all finished very strongly. The U9 girls followed. Ava McDiarmid-Hall, Lulu Howells, Macie John-Gardner and Molly Barton lined up at the start line, by this time it was raining heavily but it didn’t stop the St Joseph’s girls from running their hearts out, all of them finished in the top ten with Molly Barton finishing 2nd!
Next came the U11 boys, Jim Luckhurst, Harvey Fry and Michael Barton all ran very well, Harvey recovered from being tripped up and as they started the 2nd lap Michael was in 2nd place - could he keep this position for a further 1200m? Jim and Harvey followed closely. All three boys raced the 2nd lap with great concentration and determination, Michael finished in 2nd place another fantastic achievement. The last race was the U11 girls Kate Barrett, Laura Sant and Pearl Bamford; the rain had stopped but the course was very slippery, this didn’t faze the older girls they ran with purpose and all finished powerfully.
Final results are yet to be published, when they have been confirmed I will let everyone know their positions but well done to all the runners especially to Molly and Michael Barton who both came 2nd in their respective races. Also, many thanks to all the parents and staff, for their support, help and motivational words on this exciting, cold and damp afternoon. Mrs Jane Gardner.

During the Autumn Term, a group of Year 9 and 10 pupils from St Joseph\'s School travelled to PGL\'s Barton Hall to take part in a weekend netball tournament. As well as netball, students had the opportunity to experience adventure based learning activities. The weekend was a success with all the pupils improving various aspects of their game. Amy Meeson got some air under her feet and her game improved remarkably due to this, the average number of times Sophie Jarvis got pulled up for footwork in a match dramatically reduced and the girls all benefited from strict umpiring from experienced officials. The work ethic and dedication of team members was outstanding, most noticeable were Kate, Hannah, and Tilly. We hope to take students on a similar weekend next year with a team from each year group. Tour team - Amy Meeson, Tilly Spence, Rosie Bright, Kate Marks, Hannah Wormald, Lizzie Maunder, Tamara Boundy, Sophie Jarvis, Mrs. Gibson and Mrs Watson.
The Autumn term 2010 has seen much progress on all fronts from our junior and senior tennis players, at St Joseph\'s we run an excellent tennis coaching programme offering mini tennis (red, orange, green) and squads for players on the full court as well as individual lessons.
St Joseph\'s school offer competitions such as inter house tennis, an annual school singles competition for junior and senior players alike and competitions against other schools.
My vision is for more school competitions for all ages and stages and to get more players participating in club tennis either with me in Launceston or for those who live further a field at their local clubs. With more tennis, playing standards will rise and with more competitions better ratings will be achieved great for the children, great for St Joseph\'s.
Any parents wishing to discuss any tennis related matter or just have an update on your children\'s progress in general please contact me. I am not just here to teach but to guide you in to the world of tennis should you wish. Launceston tennis club boast a great facility with three full size courts and a mini court all floodlit within the town. Membership for juniors is a real steal at low prices and any players that want to gain access to further practice either with further coaching or practice in general then this is of great value. Any player wishing to get more information can contact me or visit the Launceston tennis club website.
Junior and senior players will have competition information at the end of every school term and it is always good to see new players competing as well as existing players. The coaches most improved mini tennis player this term is Fallon Gillies, Junior player Emma Gillard, Senior player Laura Champ. The Junior school singles champion for 2010 is Torin Gillies who defeated Emma Gillard in a close Junior final, the senior final is delayed but will be between Penny Tilsley and Abigail Logg. The Launceston cup between St Joseph\'s and Launceston college and inter house tennis in both the junior and senior school at the time of writing are still to be played. James Brobin

SPORT RELIEF MILE RUN
Children, staff and parents had a fantastic time helping those in need by running a mile at St Joseph\'s School on Friday 19th March 2010. Most children just kept going!! We all had a great time and are now looking forward to next year.
Please keep donating!
Thank you all for your support!
On a very wet Wednesday afternoon the year 10 netball squad played against Shebbear College. They all played with determination and focus. Getting off to a winning start. The score after the first quarter was 4 – 1 to St Joseph’s and the goals just kept coming even though the players’ fingers were getting colder and colder!! In the end St Joseph’s team was victorious; the final score was 18-6. Cups of tea and muffins soon made the players warm again. Well done
On Tuesday afternoons the year 10 and 11 pupils take part in a fitness session led by Launceston Rugby Team member Ryan Westren. The idea is to enhance and promote levels of fitness within the pupils. They are all working very hard and although on occasions getting muddy they are determined to achieve what Ryan has set them to do. It has been fantastic to watch pupils working so well and getting fitter over the last 3 weeks. The sessions will run over the next half term so that all the pupils will have time to increase their endurance. Keep going everyone.
St Joseph’s school show jumping teams have been out and about again and have been competing against schools across the whole of Devon and Cornwall.
This year we had two teams, Team A: Alex Reeve, Lucy Bruton, Charlotte Parnell and Lauren Jasper. Team B: Lauren, Charlotte and Alex again on different horses and Sophie Webber.
On The 3rd October both teams went up against the schools in Cornwall. On the day it was a bit hectic trying to get everyone organised but we all preformed really well under the pressure. Unfortunately Team A just missed out on being placed in a qualifying position but Team B came 5th and qualified for the next round again Devon and Cornwall.
The final night was held on Friday the 9th October. In this round the jumps were bigger and we would be competing against the top 12 teams in Devon and Cornwall. After having some coaching with our team trainer Andy Reeve we were all really exited about the finals. Everyone was nervous but all rode excellently. We got placed 7th overall and everyone had a great time. Well done to all. By Lauren Jasper Year 10 at St Joseph\'s. The year 7 and 8 hockey teams played Shebbear College earlier this term, the Year 8 team lost 2 -0 but it was a very close game and the year 7 team drew 0 - 0 a great start to their hockey fixtures. Both teams learnt a lot from the afternoon and they have continued to improve their skills and develop their understanding of the tactics used. well done to the girls and thanks to the parents who supported the teams.
Next hockey matches are v Launceston College on Wednesday 18th November 3.30-4.30pm at the college
On the 29th, 30th and 31st of August Amy Meeson competed on her horse Celtic Bay at the Junior Show Jumping Championships of Great Britain held at David Broome’s event centre, Wales. The 1st day saw Amy competing with the Follett Stock show jumping team in the team event where they won a very respectable 4th out of 39 teams. On the 2nd and 3rd day Amy competed in the 2ft 6in horse class and got 10th and 8th which well exceeded her expectations as not only did Amy have the largest horse there at 16.3hh but has also only owned her horse for a relatively short period of time (8 months). Amy would like to thank her Mum, Dad, Luke and Katie for giving up their bank holiday weekend to support her. Thank you.
