On Wednesday 25th January 2012 pupils from St Joseph’s School in Launceston welcomed Judy Pride and Lavinia Archer from Children’s Hospice South West to the school.

During the festive Christmas period at St Joseph’s the Early Years Department performed ‘The Little Angel’  and  the Junior School entertained a packed audience with their version of ‘Hoodwinked’, a witty take on Robin Hood. The children thoroughly enjoyed playing their roles in the productions.

Parents and Friends of the school kindly donated after the productions to the children’s chosen charity Children’s Hospice South West and raised an amazing £429.47.

A group of Year 5 and 6 pupils, led by the Charity Prefect, presented the cheque to Judy and Lavinia who thanked the children for their hard work.

The group have been invited to visit Little Harbour in St Austell – CHSW newest Children’s Hospice to see the new facilities which they have helped support. Little Harbour is a place of shelter and sanctuary for families coping with the most difficult of circumstance.

Merry Christmas!

St Joseph\'s School held its annual Service of Lessons and Carols at St Mary Magdalene Church in Launceston on Thursday 8th December. The Church was full and Annie Westlake (Year 7 pupil) opened the concert with a beautiful solo performance of Once in Royal David’s City.

The school choirs Gospel, Chamber Choir, Canzonetta and the School Choir performed individual pieces led by Director of Music Mrs E Mann and Music Teacher Mr A Withey. The organist was Mr J Mann.

The evening was a great way to end a busy term for St Joseph’s pupils and the school would like to thank all who attended the event especially the Mayor and Mayoress, Rev. David Michaels, for the use of St Mary Magdalene, and Rev. Malcolm Jones for the use of Central Methodist Church.

A collection on the evening on behalf of the RNLI , which is a charity that saves lives at sea, raised a total of £303.40.

The following morning the Christmas Tree Festival took over St Mary Magdalene Church and St Joseph\'s School were invited to decorate a tree. The decorations were made, with the help of St Joseph’s School pupils, in the traditional blue and white of St Joseph’s (see photo)

To all in the community we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone at St Joseph’s School.

St Josephs Student comes 3rd in 2011 Young Chef Regional Heats Judged by Celebrity Chef James Martin

On Tuesday 15th November TV chef James Martin awarded Beth Benyon (14) from St Joseph’s School, Launceston, third place in the Red Tractor beef and lamb Mmmake it with Mince Challenge 2011 South West regional heats. The competition saw budding young chefs from the local area go head-to-head for the chance to be named Regional Winner. Contestants were judged for their recipe development and culinary skills as part of this prestigious cooking contest.

Hundreds of entries were received for this year’s competition and 47 youngsters from across the country were selected to represent their region at six cook-off events judged by James. During the tense South West heat each student had just one hour to prepare, cook and plate-up their own original recipe featuring beef or lamb mince. Beth Benyon was Highly Commended in 3rd place after she fought it out against 7 other finalists.

Beth impressed the judges with her ‘Moussaka stuffed choux buns on a bed of spinach with lemon glazed carrots’. Points were scored for originality, nutrition and presentation.

Speaking about Beth’s achievement James Martin said, “The standard of entries this year was extremely high and Beth has done exceptionally well to achieve third place.  Her recipe was innovative, nutritious and well presented – but most importantly, it tasted great! A big well done to everyone who took part - it was clear that everyone worked really hard.

“It is now more important than ever before to inspire young people to cook properly and this Challenge is a perfect platform for them to learn about food, cooking and nutrition. I hope that Beth’s success will encourage more young people from the local area to get cooking and try out new and different recipes.”

Denise Spencer-Walker, Food Advisor for Red Tractor beef and lamb, said: “We received hundreds of inventive and exciting recipe ideas this year, so whittling them down to just 47 regional finalists was hard work. Beth’s enthusiasm for good food really shone through and I’m sure they will go onto achieve great culinary success in the future. I hope that all the students who entered will be inspired to make cooking a bigger part of their day-to-day lives both now and in the future.”

The Red Tractor beef and lamb Mmmake it with Mince Challenge is a cookery competition for 11-16 year-olds who are passionate about food or pursuing a career in the catering industry. The Challenge was introduced by EBLEX* to engage, educate and inspire students to get hands-on cooking experience. Entrants were asked to submit their own original, nutritious and creative recipes using beef or lamb mince, together with a photograph of the finished dish.  Students were also asked to supply a cooking method, time plan and cost breakdown within a strict budget of under £10.

And The Winner Is......St Josephs School

St Joseph\'s School in Launceston, Cornwall has won the Outstanding Progress –Independent School Award at the sixth annual Education Business Awards ceremony in London. Hosted by former BBC presenter Moira Stuart OBE the ceremony took place at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday 10th November 2011.

St Joseph\'s was shortlisted with four other independent schools nationally and Head teacher Mrs Susan Rowe, who attended the ceremony, said the tension was palpable as the citation for the winning school was read and she was absolutely delighted when St Joseph’s won. When interviewed she said “It is an honour to receive this award on behalf of the whole school. The award ceremony was excellent and to hear our name was thrilling. I am delighted for the staff, pupils, parents and governors of St Joseph’s and am so proud to be a part of this highly successful school.”

An element of the award that was particularly important to Mrs Rowe was that the school had not been nominated by anyone associated with St Joseph’s, but had been identified by researchers working on behalf of Psi and Education Business Magazine who scrutinized a wide range of statistics, ratings, local and national media reports and education case studies in order to uncover best practice from both state and independent schools.

Alongside the school’s outstanding examination results across all key stages and the exceptional achievements within both sport and music the award also recognised the remarkable amount of community fund-raising undertaken by the pupils and the level of respect the pupils have for each other and their school environment. The aim of the school to provide ‘A Firm Foundation For Life’ is clearly achieved. The award was sponsored by Espresso Education and Channel 4 Learning.

The school recently received the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Award for Excellence and is increasingly sought after. With a substantial increase in pupil numbers and a commitment to maintain small class sizes, St Joseph\'s School combines broad, challenging, quality education with excellent pastoral care and extra-curricular opportunities.

For further information about the Education Business Awards please visit http://www.ebawards.co.uk/

The school welcomes visitors to come and have a look around the school and share in its unique atmosphere. There are scholarships awards available with the next examinations taking place on Saturday 14th January 2012 for both the Junior and Senior Schools. Celebrity Chef James Martin is blown away by St Josephs student Beth Benyon

James Martin chooses Launceston hopeful to compete in the
Red Tractor beef and lamb Mmmake it with Mince Challenge 2011

On 4th November, Beth Benyon (14) from St Joseph’s School, Launceston was announced as one of the talented finalists for the national search to find the country\'s next top cooking talent for the Red Tractor beef and lamb Mmmake it with Mince Challenge 2011.

After receiving hundreds of entries from across the country, those that were shortlisted will take part in six regional heats in the hope of eventually being crowned National Champion of the Mmmake it with Mince Challenge 2011.

James and his fellow judges were blown away by Beth’s creative dish, Moussaka Stuffed Choux Buns and she will now go on to compete in a regional cook-off against fellow regional finalists in Bristol on Tuesday 15 November. James will judge the recipes live and each regional winner will then have the chance to be crowned National Champion and win the money-can\'t-buy prize of spending a day with James in London, watching Saturday Kitchen live, meeting the guests and visiting some of the capital\'s top restaurants.

The Challenge, which is led by James Martin and is free to enter, is now in its sixth year and aimed at 11-16 year-olds who are passionate about cooking, The Red Tractor beef and lamb Mmmake it with Mince Challenge is the ultimate competition which gives young people the opportunity for their culinary talent to be noticed. Every year the standard gets higher and higher and James Martin commented,

“I’m so impressed with the quality of entries that we have received this year. From innovative new recipes to modern versions of traditional dishes, all the entries have shown creativity and talent in abundance. This year, it has been harder than ever to choose our finalists but the shortlisted entries are hugely impressive and I have no doubt that they will all have bright cooking futures. I always look forward to the cook-offs and this year more than ever, I can’t wait to try the finalists’ beef and lamb recipes!

“The competition is something that I’m really passionate about as I think it’s so important to encourage kids to experiment in the kitchen and develop their food skills.”

EBLEX* launched the challenge to engage, educate and inspire students to get hands-on cooking experience and appreciate the importance of good nutrition, quality ingredients and develop an understanding of where food comes from.

With a recent study showing that 60% of young people are leaving home without the skills to cook a basic meal like Spaghetti Bolognese, it’s important, now more than ever, to give young people the support and skills needed to cook simple recipes. www.5by25.com is a new campaign, sponsored by EBLEX, helping to support young people in mastering five basic recipes by the age of 25.

Denise Spencer-Walker, Food Adviser at EBLEX, said, \"The standard of entries this year has been extremely high. Beth has done exceptionally well to make the finals and I\'m sure she will have a fantastic time at the regional heats this month.

She is pictured here with her last Year 11 class for whom she has much affection and admiration. “We are all leaving together and I will be interested to see how their lives pan out. They were an exceptional class all round”

Full Steam Ahead

St Joseph’s School Junior pupils from Years 1, 2 and 3 were delighted to be invited to Launceston Steam Railway to meet local author Georgie Adams. We were greeted by Mr Mann, who was going to drive the train for us and then Georgie read extracts from one of her books, ‘Wisher and the Runaway Piglet’.  She then accompanied us on the train as we travelled along part of the Kensey Valley, the setting for much of the action in her Railway Rabbits series.

The shiny red engine pulling our carriages was named ‘Covertcoat’ known as the red dragon to the Longears family who have named it ‘Spitfire’. Although fearful of Spitfire, several rabbits were bravely out and about on the day and were spotted by the children. There was however some dispute as to which characters they were!

Back at the station, Georgie read several more extracts from another story,’ Bramble and the Easter Egg’, before handing each child a signed copy of a book. Everyone was also given an Easter egg. What a wonderful ending to a really super visit that the children are still talking about.

Many thanks to Georgie Adams, Nigel  Bowman and Jonathan Mann for their time and generosity.

Year 1 visited Lawrence House museum to look around the Victorian kitchen.

They were fascinated by the tin bath and enjoyed hearing about family bath night in front of the range!

They handled an old iron and kettle and were very surprised at how heavy they were. They quickly realised that wash day entailed a lot of hard work without our modern machines.

The children also worked in the Toy Room and ordered toys in a time line from over 100 years ago to present day, learning about the different materials they were made from.

Thank you to Sylvia Wright for such an informative and enjoyable visit.

Trip to Plymouth Pavilions
On Monday 14th June, Years 5 and 6 travelled to Plymouth Pavilions to see ‘BBC Concert Orchestra Learn’, a program designed to introduce the orchestra to students in Cornwall and Devon. The orchestra played some pieces of music that many of the children recognised; such as the theme tune for the Simpsons, the Imperial March and the theme from ‘Merlin’.  They also played some slightly less well known pieces such as ‘Spin Round Moscow’ composed by Demitri Shostakovich and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons played on the electric guitar. All the pupils thoroughly enjoyed their trip out.  Seeing and hearing Kirstin O’Brien introduce and explain each piece was a treat for everyone. We learned a lot about the music and the instruments that the orchestra played.  Hopefully after our wonderful experience many children will start to play an instrument or practise even harder if they already play one. We would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Smith for organising our trip. Pearl Bamford and Annie Westlake. (Year 5)

Driven To Succeed

St. Joseph’s School in Launceston has taken delivery of a new 17 seat Ford Transit mini bus supplied by local Ford dealership, Tregoningford of Wadebridge.

The purchase of the new mini bus is but a small part of exciting plans at St Joseph’s School which includes the expansion of teaching and recreational activities to include the admission of year 7 boys from September 2010 and plans for a brand new Sixth Form facility in the future.  St Joseph’s School is a private school currently catering for a mixed age range of boys and girls from pre-school age upwards. The School Bursar, David Mitchell said “ The School Governors have sanctioned a plan for the School to include an upgrade and expansion of facilities to enable us to move forward whilst still providing an environment in which our young people can develop both academically and socially. Included in our plan is the replacement of our current mini bus fleet. Having previously dealt with Tregoningford on a personal and professional level over many years I had no hesitation in contacting them again. We were able to agree on a joint sponsorship arrangement whereby Tregoningford have contracted to replace our current fleet of vehicles with a Ford Transit mini bus fleet and to also provide servicing and maintenance. Tregoningford have provided us with excellent service and peace of mind – there is always somebody on hand to answer and deal with any questions we may have”.

St Joseph’s School runs its own mini bus fleet covering, not only local transport needs, but wider educational needs to include an annual trip to France for its students and attending other venues and events, notably in connection with its award winning choir.

Chris Hawke, Director of Tregoningford responsible for commercial vehicle sales, said “Tregoningford is pleased to assist St Joseph’s School in provision and servicing of a mini bus fleet. It is evident that St Joseph’s is a forward thinking school with big expansion plans and we are pleased to play a part in those plans. The School has impressed us all at Tregoningford as a progressive educational establishment where emphasis on social skills and values is paramount alongside educational excellence. St Joseph’s is a great school with a lovely atmosphere where all children are actively cared for in a safe, friendly but challenging environment.”

Help for Haiti
Over £1000 pounds was collected in one day at St Joseph’s School when Senior and Junior pupils joined together to raise money for the victims of the devastating Haiti earthquake. The day was planned by the pupils who came to school in mufti or fancy dress in return for giving a donation to the appeal. The parents and pupils also made cakes and biscuits which were sold during the morning break and this added to the amazing total raised. The £1151.35  has been donated to the Shelter Box Appeal which is actively involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of the many children and adults who are without food, water and shelter in the earthquake area. It is hoped that the money from St Joseph’s will enable two more fully equipped boxes to be sent to Haiti.

Dazzling Dental Dimensions Denticulation Day

Dazzling Dental Dimensions Denticulation Day
Smile! A very big thank you to MR and Mrs. A. Crighton who helped organise an educational visit for years 2 and 3 from St. Joseph’s School to their Dental Practice ‘Dental Dimensions’ for a dazzling dental dimensions denticulation day.  The children were split into three groups and given a range of tasks to complete. The first group had to search for dental abnormalities using small observation mirrors while carrying out dental charts in detail. The children loved wearing the masks and using the very expensive equipment. The next group had to look closely at a range of different teeth; wearing gloves and masks, they discussed why the teeth had to be removed. Drawings of these teeth helped children to understand the structure in greater detail. They also learnt about gums, dentine, roots, enamel, nerves and many other dental terms. Lastly, children had their toothy grins photographed using some of the very latest technology in dentistry, after chewing on disclosure tablets of course. They then learned how to brush their teeth and keep their gums healthy.  Mr. Newton, year 3 teacher, had his teeth cast with a moulding compound called Alginate. He looked really funny and it was great when he couldn’t speak! Thank you to all the staff for your help. We all had a first-class visit and hope that in the future we may come back to you again. Year 5 Visit Buckland Abbey

On Tuesday 20th October, Year 5 visited Buckland Abbey to study Sir Francis Drake as part of our history topic this term.  When we arrived we were amazed at how beautiful it was and although it was raining hard, the buildings were still breathtaking.
The barn was the School Room, as well as the clothes room and after putting our stuff away we met our guide June.  June asked us lots of questions before we had our snack.
Because it was raining we when into the clothes room first and tried on some beautiful Tudor dresses. We wore shifts that are like long white skirts that go under your dress and jacket.  Ladies wore stockings under their dresses as well as hats and bonnets on their heads.  Boys would put on baggy puffy shorts with a jacket and a lovely long cloak.
The big barn was our next stop.  It was huge with a massive cider press.  The monks would store their food and carts here.  Next, after lunch, we visited to the house were Sir Francis Drake lived.  We watched a video about his life and travels, it said that he died of the Bloody Flux and was buried at sea in a lead coffin. We also saw his drum and his treasures.  In the Great Hall were some spy holes high up on the wall were the monks use to watch people.  The second floor had been made to look like a ship with the food the sailors would have eaten.
The strangest thing we saw was a portrait of the last of Drake’s family to live in the house.  Where ever you walked the eyes of the lady followed you.  Despite this spooky lady we all had a great time at the Abbey and learned lots about Sir Francis Drake.

Walk like an Egyptian
Year 4 had a fantastic day learning all about the Egyptians and their way of life. It was very exciting when Ceri Bryant was transformed into a mummy. Children looked on in amazement to see the body cleansed and prepared for the afterlife. The children all looked very realistic in their costumes. A very special thank you to Exeter Museum for being it all to life.

Science Day
Superb Science Day

The whole school were privileged to welcome scientists from the Chemistry Department of Bristol University visit us for the day to give children from the early years up to year 11 and truly magnificent science day.

The children watched in amazement as colourless liquids were mixed turning them yellow; as igniting dragster fuel fumes caused jets of powerful blue flames; they saw the scientists make their own oxygen;  eggs being “fried” in liquid nitrogen; as well as freezing flowers, rubber tubing and  bananas.  We observed bubbling liquids changing colour through a spectrum; we even held the most coldest substance causing it to heat up and make a gas. But what the children enjoyed best of all was seeing individuals jump out of their skins when the hydrogen explosion resounded throughout the school hall.

Year 5&6 also spent time experimenting in the lab mixing liquids to make solids and mixing exact quantities of liquids to predict the timing of a colour change.

We are delighted that Tim, a lecturer in Chemistry at Bristol University and Ben, a research scientist, were able to spend time at St Joseph’s in between their busy schedules.

A very big thank you to Mrs Marks, Junior Science Coordinator, for organising the visit.
