about the reception
At St Joseph’s, Launceston, we know that the foundation laid down in the formative stage of a child’s education has a life-long impact. When the influential Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) study found that the effect of attending a quality preschool are still evident in a student’s results at the age of 15 we were in full agreement.
With this in mind, we have made Reception at St Joseph’s a focus for every child’s future. With the decision to focus on Reception, and to no longer split the facility with the Nursery, we have more than doubled the space for the Reception class, while maintaining the focus on excellence that was noted in our most recent Independent School’s Inspection report.
Reception is expertly led by Mrs Kemp and Mrs Hampton, two highly experienced and qualified full time staff who have an outstanding understanding of how children at this crucial time in their lives enjoy and achieve, and can embed education into both play and more formative learning. We firmly support for the recent EPPE Study that shows unequivocally pupils make more progress where staff have higher qualifications and this is evident from the moment you walk into our Early Years setting.
There has long been strong argument that this is the most important phase of a child’s education. As such, St Joseph’s makes provision to allow the education of the whole child, both in the light and airy classroom environment where achievement is supported by excellent resources and a genuine sense of fun in learning, and in the outstanding facilities that the Reception class have access to as part of a small, caring school that provides a continuity of education for pupils to the age of 16.
Students benefit from Outdoor Education, access to the Orchard and Outdoor Classroom, use of the hall for drama and musical performances, use of the Astroturf facilities, use of the extensive playing field as well as a fully equipped outdoor play space that offers both grass and all weather play options in a secure and caring environment exclusively to Reception and Year One.
Links with Year One further support the aspirational element of St Joseph’s Reception class. They are able to support one another, allowing opportunities to foster strong relationships in the classroom and beyond, and to make sure that Reception pupils have a true sense of belonging, of being known, of opportunity.
Reception is the starting point for a child’s St Joseph’s journey. We lay the foundations for a future in the school and beyond. It is an exciting and transformative time for pupils, and a focus for the school. To be a part of a child’s journey from the moment they join is a wonderful opportunity, and we will make sure every opportunity is taken to provide the very best start for every child in our care.
