On a cold February afternoon, 13 St. Joseph’s pupils ran in the St. Petroc’s Cross Country event at Summerleaze Downs, Bude. The pupils in years 5 and 6 ran a total of 2500m two laps of an undulating wind swept course and the year 4 pupils ran one lap, about 1300m. All the pupils walked the course taking in the route and any obstacles that were in the way, they listened well and where ready to race.
The first race was the U9 boys Sam Luckhurst, Archie Sparrow and Maxwell Wilkerson-Hunt took part; all had good starts and they all finished very strongly. The U9 girls followed. Ava McDiarmid-Hall, Lulu Howells, Macie John-Gardner and Molly Barton lined up at the start line, by this time it was raining heavily but it didn’t stop the St Joseph’s girls from running their hearts out, all of them finished in the top ten with Molly Barton finishing 2nd!
Next came the U11 boys, Jim Luckhurst, Harvey Fry and Michael Barton all ran very well, Harvey recovered from being tripped up and as they started the 2nd lap Michael was in 2nd place – could he keep this position for a further 1200m? Jim and Harvey followed closely. All three boys raced the 2nd lap with great concentration and determination, Michael finished in 2nd place another fantastic achievement. The last race was the U11 girls Kate Barrett, Laura Sant and Pearl Bamford; the rain had stopped but the course was very slippery, this didn’t faze the older girls they ran with purpose and all finished powerfully.
Final results are yet to be published, when they have been confirmed I will let everyone know their positions but well done to all the runners especially to Molly and Michael Barton who both came 2nd in their respective races. Also, many thanks to all the parents and staff, for their support, help and motivational words on this exciting, cold and damp afternoon. Mrs Jane Gardner.
